Online Education Requirements

Online education isn't for everyone, there are certain physical, mental and emotional requirements that must be met in order for the online education to be a successful endeavor.

Personal Requirements

It takes a certain type of personality and mindset to do well in an online education environment which is basically a self-directed course of study. If you are not cut from the right fabric, you might find yourself struggling with the immense freedom and self-motivation required to do well outside of the classroom.

  • Good Personal Communication: Online courses are managed through Internet chats and message board postings primarily, with a good deal of e-mailing back and forth between you and the instructor and other classmates thrown in for good measure. If you struggle with writing a good letter, or expressing yourself well in the written word, you might either want to consider taking some courses in written communication at the beginning of your education or seek a more traditional educational environment.
  • Good Time Management: Taking several courses online means that you will have several books and different schedules for meeting different goals such as online tests or reports that are due. The ability to organize and manage several course schedules and their requirements so that you don't miss critical deadlines is important.
  • Self-Motivational Abilities: In a traditional learning environment, your instructor will usually assign work that must be completed before a certain class date and will be with you on a weekly basis reminding you and/or encouraging you to do certain tasks as they see fit. In an online educational environment, you will not receive that same level of personal interaction to help motivate you, so you will have to be able to motivate yourself to get your work done regularly and on time. Procrastinating in online study makes for extremely poor study habits.

Technological or Physical Requirements

In addition to being personally cut from a certain kind of cloth in order to do well in online study, you should also be sure that you have certain equipment at your disposal before you attempt an education online. If you cannot meet these requirements personally, then your local library or Internet cafe may be suitable.

  • High-Speed Internet Connection: Though not an absolute requirement, attempting to get your education online using a dial-up connection is guaranteed to lead to some frustrating moments as you try to download lessons or connect to your school's online portal for a chat or discussion board posting.
  • A Moderately New Computer: Your computer does not have to be a super-fast hyper-computer that ran you several thousand dollars, but it should be one which was purchased at an absolutely minimum during this century in order to let you take advantage of the technologies that will be used in your online classes.
  • Personal Comfort with Computers: If you've never sent an e-mail before or are terrified at even the thought of streaming video, you might want to take some classes first to familiarize yourself with the systems of a computer and computer software before pursuing an education online.
